A city guide that puts Kavala in every visitor's pocket.

Kavala Places — hero image

Kavala has more stories than any guidebook can hold. Kavala Places puts them in every visitor’s pocket: an app that maps the city’s monuments, museums and hidden corners, with walking routes to follow and audio guides to listen to along the way — in four languages.

Created for the Municipality of Kavala, the project was designed, built and launched by the studio end to end — and it grew into far more than an app. One project became three experiences: a mobile city guide for iOS and Android, an interactive web portal at kavalaplaces.gr, and a virtual-reality collaboration that put Kavala’s monuments in front of a worldwide audience.

Behind everything stands serious documentation work. Twenty-six monuments of Kavala and Philippi were recorded with modern techniques — photogrammetry with drone and terrestrial imaging, more than 15,000 photographs and 300+ ground control points — producing true-texture 3D models with sub-centimetre accuracy. That digital archive is what powers every channel of the project: web, mobile, augmented and virtual reality.

The app turns a phone into a personal guide: interactive walking routes connect 26 points of interest, each with photography, history, audio narration and the practical details visitors actually need. It was built offline-first, so the full guide keeps working without an internet connection anywhere in the city, and its content ships in English, Greek, Romanian and German — made for an international audience. It is free for everyone, on the App Store and Google Play.

The website carries the deeper dive: fifteen historical places with rich histories, a 3D map of the old town powered by Cesium, and six Web AR experiences that place true-scale monument models in augmented reality straight from the browser — no app required.

The third experience reached furthest. In collaboration with Puzzling Places, six monuments — from the Kamares aqueduct and the Halil Bey Mosque to the ancient theatre of Philippi — became 3D puzzles played on Meta Quest, Steam, PlayStation VR and Pico. A city guide for visitors on the ground, and a piece of Kavala’s heritage that anyone in the world can hold in their hands.
